Selection of wood and wood species is the main parameter influencing overall quality of a violin and eventually its sound.
The sound heard from a violin is the result of air vibrating and released out of "f" holes in the instrument.
A bridge needs to be fitted to the violin by carving its feet to match the curvature of the violin belly. Therefore, the wood of the instrument should be light and resonant.
Ebony is dense enough to sink in water. It is finely-textured and has a mirror finish when polished, making it valuable as an ornamental wood. Having an average density of 1.12 g/cm3 makes this species an ideal material for fingerboard, tail piece and pegs of the violin.
Some bridges have an insert of ebony where the E-string will go to prevent its digging into the bridge.
The ebony inlay acts as a support for the E string and delays the string from cutting into the bridge
